[series]: Centaur's Worries (Centaur no Nayami)
[character]: Himeno Kimihara
[character history / background]: The world Himeno lives in is remarkably like our own, with the exception of the fact that all the "humans" are divided in to four main types, winged people (imps/demons, angels), fish people (mermaids), horse people (centaurs, unicorns), and other bipedal people (satyrs, longears, cat and dog people, etc.). Other species are also present, including reptilian and amphibian people, though the latter are rare and reclusive due to environmental constrictions and the former are Antarticans who have uneasy diplomatic ties to the rest of the world.
As the manga tells it, the reason humans as we know it did not become the evolutionary end of the chain is because some prehistoric event caused hexapodal animals to become dominant, who then evolved in to the "humans" of the manga. (The six legged animals all evolved in to the six legged humans of today- centaurs with six legs, winged people with their wings counting as fifth and sixth limbs, mermaids with central fins bringing the count to six, and satyrs, etc. all possessing skeletal signs of the extra pair.) The class biology teacher says that if tetrapods hadn't died out there might be creatures who walked on only two legs and had no other limbs, (aka humans as we know them). All domesticated and wild animals in this world also possess six limbs, including farming cattle, house pets, etc. Because all the current species shared a common ancestor, interbreeding is possible, though some pairings are more likely than others to produce birth defects.
Of course, the history of the world is quite different considering this change, but many of the same background is presented- wars come about not as much from religion or skin color so much as species differences, and there has been mention of slavery in the past, (specifically of centaurs in the past in Europe). Because the manga takes place in the "modern" world, much of that history is not an issue in first world countries. It is a hate crime in many places to ride a centaur, for example, or to cut an angel's halo off. Modern events like the war in the middle east and the election of a historic president in the US, (the first centaur president, rather than the first African American), show that the world of this manga is meant to be a mirror to our own. The only differences of note in the modern world are changes in school and government organization that reflect species needs, as well as in technology and fashion, such as cars designed to be driven by centaurs, special brushes for those who need to reach around a horn to do their hair, clothing designed for wings and tails, etc.
Which brings us to our main character. Himeno Kimihara is a centaur. Specifically, she's a centaur in the 10th grade who lives with her mother and father in a small home and has most of her life currently focused on school. The Kimihara family through her father descends from a line of samurai in Japanese history, (centaurs being respected as warriors in their own right in Japan as opposed to the slavery as mounts they faced in the European Dark Ages). Her mother is a housewife and her father appears to be a researcher with a penchant for books. When Himeno grows up she wants to be a doctor or a veterinarian. Her hobbies include spending time with her friends, Nozomi and Kyoko, acting, (she's shown to be quite good during the school play chapter, stating she'd been chosen to play the princess almost every year), yabusame, sampling sweets, and jogging.
Throughout the manga Himeno goes through a variety of Slice of Life situations, from puberty-fueled worries when a boy asks her out to the school play, from taking care of her young cousin to trying to figure out what to do with her hair. She doesn't live the most exciting life in general, but she's mostly happy if you discount the worries of being a teenager. She will be coming in to the City on her way to school.
[character abilities]: As a centaur she can run quite fast, (25-30mph), and her backside is quite strong, capable of carrying upwards of a hundred pounds with little problem. Other than the physical traits of her species, Himeno doesn't possess any special powers.
[character personality]: Himeno is a young woman with a big heart and a slightly fretful nature. She cares deeply about her friends and family, always trying to take care of them. She will always gladly be a shoulder to cry on, volunteer to help a friend study, take care of her young cousin, or do what people ask of her if it seems she can help them. She is a little insecure about herself as many teenage girls are wont to be, and though she has modeled a little before when her mother's magazine editor friend needed a centaur at the last minute, she has trouble believing herself to be attractive or be someone boys want to date or someone who is capable of being popular. She reacts to attention a bit shyly, but always kindly and humbly.
Feelings are something she is very mindful of, and even if she feels like she has to say something negative she always tries to work up her courage to face someone and do it gently. When a boy professes to liking her and she wants to reject him she does it properly with an "I'm sorry" before running away in embarrassment. It's hard for her to not shy away from awkward situations or grow quiet and introverted when pressed on sensitive things, but she tries her best. She can be easily tricked or deceived by others since she is a little naive, a little gullible. Her friend Nozomi often takes advantage of this to embarrass Himeno a bit, especially since she's so shy about sexual things that girls her age are just starting to wonder about.
All in all, Himeno has a hard time perceiving people negatively unless they are obviously and outright violent or despicable, and looks at the good in people. She is very open minded and accepting, with very little speciesism in her mind besides a slight fear of Antarticans based off an old horror movie she saw when she was young. She doesn't see anything wrong with two of her classmates dating, a lesbian couple, and never seems to judge others overly much.
Himeno does generally well in school and in her homelife. Like most teens she sometimes quarrels with her parents but only over small things like when she'd rather sit around reading a book than go work out with her mom, or when she won't wake up for school on time. She can be brave if others encourage her, and maybe she frets a bit more than most girls about things like heights, toilets, boys, and the like, but. Despite being a centaur, she is basically your average high school girl with a "normal" middle-class existence.
Yeah, the City's going to be a bit of a shock.

[ooc; Himeno has no idea about the network, or... the City, so- her text messages have hit the network rather than the phones they're supposed to reach. Action replies are also welcome- she's on the Subway Panic!]
[third person / log sample]:
It had been an relatively normal day, like the day before, and likely the day after.
Himeno had woken up a little later than usual and rushed downstairs to the clatter of hooves on the wide stairs and her mother's shouts to hurry up and wash her face before breakfast. In to the bathroom and a few muttered complaints about the frizzy, untamable mane of hair she possessed and she was out again, grabbing up her bag, her lunch, her phone, and some toast before she made it to the entrance way of the house, her father poking his head in as she was slipping her hooves in to rubber horseshoes.
"No time for breakfast, Himeno?" Her mouth had been full of toast, so she'd only shaken her head and waved goodbye before she was out the door, flicking open her phone as she galloped down the street towards the subway station. Barely in time, (but still on time!), she made it on to the train just before the door closed inches behind her waving tail.
With the luxury of a moment to catch her breath she'd checked her messages- two, from Kyouko and Nozomi asking if she'd overslept again and saying they would be taking the earlier train. It was between hitting the "reply" button and the announcement, "This is the-" when the earthquake hit.
To be honest, Himeno didn't know it was an earthquake, but that was the only thing she could imagine. The world had seemed to shake, and she lost her balance, her left hind leg slipped on the smooth train floor and only a last minute grab for the overhead handle had saved her an embarrassing tumble to the floor- that would have been dangerous as well as embarrassing, she could have accidentally struck someone with a hoof trying to right herself, or worse, fallen on someone. The lights flickered, and her eyes widened, casting about in a surge of panic before the power stabilized and the train car's voyage evened out.
"Aha..." A nervous whicker of a laugh escaped as she adjusted her footing, gripped the bar a bit tighter. "That was a little scary..." It was to no one in particular, and she expected not to get a reply- she didn't. But that was fine, it was a train after all, and you weren't really supposed to talk in them, let alone to people you didn't know. Ah- but she should check on her parents. Ever mindful of manners, even in a situation like this, Himeno refrained from calling, opting for text messages, waiting for the next station patiently until she had service to send it.
She didn't even notice that the station name they called out wasn't one she was familiar with.
It was only a few stations later, when she hadn't gotten a reply back that she began to fret, sent a message to her father instead. It was probably just that her mom had gone to run errands and forgotten her cellphone. That's all. Nozomi and Kyouko would laugh at her later for panicking. They were probably laughing already at school. That's what she told herself as she waited.
Thoughts of upcoming exams and archery competitions filled her head as she poked about the calender on her cell, another two stops worth. Before the anxious feelings welled up again and she cast a look around her, really looked for the first time. And it was what she saw that made her back up in consternation, clutching her school bag to her chest. The people around her... they didn't look right. Where were their horns, their halos? There wasn't a hoof in sight besides her own. She'd heard sometimes that people could get in to that body modification stuff, but this far?
"Now arriving at-" was all she caught before she fled, hooves stamping nervously by the door until it slid open and she could dash for the gate, her long hair streaming behind her and her ears folded back in consternation and confusion. Where was the information desk, she should talk to a station attendant, or a police officer, or-
Didn't catch the sign above the platform, the one that read "SUBWAY PANIC".
